About

Kava is a shrub and the root of the plant has been harvested and used for medical, religious, and ceremonial purposes in the ides of the South Pacific for centuries.  The kava plant is part of the pepper family.

Kava has been shown to ease anxiety or depression, relaxes muscle, produces a restful sleep, help with focus and concentration, calms nerves, creates a general feeling of well-being and peace, reduces inhibitions, and makes people more sociable.   There are no signs of kava being addictive and when stopping kava use no signs of withdrawal.

This supplement is known by many different names, such as:  kava kava, rauschpfeffer, intoxicating pepper, ava, yaqona, sakau, kew, awa, kawa, ava pepper, and tonga.

Suggested Dose

Kava can be purchased in capsule form, liquid form, tablet form, paste form, or the kava root itself can be purchased. Kava is often consumed in a liquid form made from the root of the kava plant and may be served a kava tea in the islands of the South Pacific.

The recommended adult dose (for individuals 18 years and older) is typically between 50 to 280 milligrams per day.  It is recommended when you first start taking a kava supplement start with a low dose and gradually increase the dosage over a period of time.

You can generally buy kava online or at your local health food store.  You may find when you buy kava online that it is at lower prices than in the health food store.  This is because online stores have a lower overhead than a physical store and can pass that saving onto their customers.  Before you buy a kava supplement, or any supplement, review the side effects, and known drug interactions.  Some websites will even offer you free supplements to try prior to purchase.

Health Information

There are reports of symptoms that appear after taking a kava supplement for a long period of time.  These symptoms include: reddening eyes; scaly skin eruptions; rashes; yellowish discoloration of skin, nails, and hair; puffiness of the face; blood in urine; and blood abnormalities. These symptoms may be more pronounced if consuming a kava supplement while smoking or drinking alcohol.   There are also reports of liver damage, cirrhosis, and liver failure of individuals taking a kava.

Individuals taking the recommended dosage of kava may experience gastrointestinal problems, such as nausea, vomiting, or stomach pain.  It is not recommended that individuals suffering from Parkinson’s disease take kava supplements because it may increase muscle weakness and twitching of the muscles.  It is also recommended that people with existing liver problems not take a kava supplement. Also, kava is a natural blood thinner, individuals taking anticoagulant or anti-platelent should avoid taking this supplement.

Safety Information

As when taking any medication or supplement, always read the label and take only as directed. Talk with your medical professional before taking a kava supplement if you are taking prescription medication in order to reduce the risk of drug interaction. Contact your doctor immediately if you experience any unusual side effects.
